Key Themes and Topics

The Congress runs from Monday 24 July to Friday 28 July inclusive, with the official opening taking place on the evening of Sunday 23 July. A free day has been scheduled on Wednesday 26 July to enable delegates to participate together in a range of specially organised tours to areas of key interest such as the Barrier Reef or the rainforests near Cape Tribulation.

As always, ISSFAL 2006 will serve as a focus for communication between academic and industry scientists, health professionals, administrators and educators about issues related to the biology of fatty acids and lipids and their mediators. A number of issues will be highlighted:

  • Fatty acids and brain plasticity across the lifecycle
  • Fatty acid and carbohydrate interactions
  • Fatty acid biosynthesis, metabolism and catabolism
  • Eicosanoids and docosanoids: the old and the new
  • Maternal and infant PUFA
  • Fatty acids and obesity
  • Inflammation and immunity
  • Genes and dietary fats
  • Drug-nutrient interactions

In addition there will be a number of special workshops that will be conducted before and after the main conference.

The Congress will stress the role of discussion and adequate time will be allowed for this in all sessions. In addition the Congress will feature a special evening debate.

Invitees

ISSFAL 2006 will target the scientists of the future and we plan to provide up to 100 grants to young investigators to help them get to the Australian meeting. A proportion of these grants will be reserved for young investigators from developing countries. In addition, we hope to attract approximately 350 international delegates including cardio-specialists, lipidologists, nutritionists, dietitians, geneticists, chemical pathologists, obesity and diabetes specialists, and general medical practitioners.

The Conference Organisers, Dr Bob Gibson, Dr Maria Makrides and Dr Andrew Sinclair extend an invitation to all interested scientists to meet us in Cairns in 2006.
